Karppanen and Mäkäräinen Take Victory in the Lapponia Ski Race

New names were added to the list of overall winners in the main categories of the Lapponia Ski Race, as Miro Karppanen claimed the men’s title and Kaisa Mäkäräinen won the women’s race.

“It’s always nice to win. It didn’t come easily, the competition was tough too. That always makes the victory even sweeter,” Karppanen said.

Mäkäräinen has been seen at Lapponia before, but this was her first time skiing the entire Lapponia event and the Karra Huikonen stage.

“Nice route. Probably the distance and the fact that it was the last day meant that the pace wasn’t too intense. Most of the race was quite relaxed,” Mäkäräinen said.

Wednesday’s stage winners were Anne Kyllönen and Lauri Vuorinen. Kyllönen was participating in Lapponia for the first time and enjoyed the experience.

“An absolutely super fun experience! It was really nice to ski the final stage with Karppa (Varis) and Koutaniemi—they gave amazing support,” Kyllönen said gratefully.

Monday’s stage winners were Thomas Maloney Westgård and Kaisa Mäkäräinen.

“The race was interesting,” said Maloney Westgård, who enjoys spending time in Lapland.
